Dunhuang - Sand Mountains for a camel ride Dunhuang - Mogao Buddhist caves Dunhuang - The silk road

Dunhuang at first sight may appear an unremarkable Silk Road town, but just beyond its market streets, poplars and grape vines lie some of he Silk Road’s most celebrated sites.

Most remarkable are the Mogao Caves, where skilled Buddhist artisans painted and carved a vast gallery of religious images dating back over 1500 years. Hidden in the grottoes of this barren desert valley, this incredible showcase of centuries of Buddhist art has been protected by the area’s dry climate and inhospitable environment, and is today one of China’s most treasured World Heritage sites.

Join Travel Indochina to explore this wonder, a highlight for many of our Silk Road travelers. We also travel to the Singing Sand Mountains for a camel ride past Crescent Moon Lake, below some of the world’s most impressive sand dunes. And a perfect finish to any day in Dunhuang: at the town’s friendly night markets for a feast of Uighur cuisine.
